How old do I need to be to rent a vehicle from DriveSkye?

Anyone wishing to rent a vehicle must be at least 25 years old and have held a full, valid driving licence for 2 years at the start of your rental.

Do I need to bring my driving licence with me?

Yes. All drivers must bring all parts of their driving licence with them. Under the terms of our insurance, we can currently only rent to drivers whose driving licence was issued in the United Kingdom, EU, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

If you hold a driving licence whose country of issue is different from the above, please contact us directly to discuss rental options.

Is there a minimum length that I must have held my licence for?

Yes. All drivers must bring all parts of their driving licence with them. Under the terms of our insurance, we can currently only rent to drivers whose driving licence was issued in the United Kingdom, EU, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

Do I need to bring proof of identification?

Yes. You must bring the payment card that you used to make your booking along with photo identification such as a passport or national identity card.

We will also require proof of address which could include a recent utility bill or bank statement.

What is included in the rental price?

Your rental includes comprehensive insurance, roadside recovery, SatNav, unlimited mileage and VAT.

Will I need to give a pre-authorisation or pay a security deposit?

Yes. We will require a pre-authorisation of £500 to cover the insurance excess. This must be secured by credit card upon collection of the vehicle.

Where do I collect the rental vehicle?

You can collect your rental vehicle from MacGillivray Motors Ltd, which is a five-minute walk from the ferry terminal in Armadale or alternatively, we can meet you at the terminal itself.

We can also arrange for you to collect the car at Kyle of Lochalsh for an additional fee of £20.00 (charged at time of booking).

Can I have a vehicle delivered to me at another location?

Other collection points on the Isle of Skye and the nearby mainland can be arranged upon request and will incur an additional charge, which will be calculated on associated mileage and staff costs. Please contact us directly for a quote.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday to Friday from 08:00 – 17:30. Vehicles can be collected and returned during these hours, or outwith by prior arrangement.

Will I be allowed to inspect the vehicle when I collect it?

Yes. It is very important to us that you are happy with your rental and that you feel confident driving the vehicle. You will have the opportunity to check and agree both the interior and exterior condition of the vehicle and a vehicle condition report will be signed by both you and us. A member of the team will also make sure that you are familiar with the basic controls, operation and use of the vehicle before driving the vehicle.

Will the vehicle have GPS or SatNav?

Yes. All our vehicles have SatNav devices which are included in the rental price.

Do you have child car seats available?

Yes. We can arrange for child car seats to be supplied as part of your rental for an additional fee of £12.00. Please request at the time of booking.

Will the vehicle come with a full tank of fuel?

Yes. All our rental vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be returned with a full tank or you will be required to pay the costs of re-fuelling.

Am I allowed to smoke in the car?

No. It is against the law to smoke in public places within the United Kingdom and the vehicle is considered a public place. Any evidence of smoking in the vehicle will result in a £100 fine.

Can anyone else drive the car?

Yes, but only if they fulfil the conditions of rental and have signed the rental agreement. We charge a fee for every additional driver of £10.00 per rental.

Can I extend the rental period?

Yes. We can arrange to extend the rental period subject to vehicle availability, but this must be requested before the end of the original hire period to ensure continual insurance cover.

What happens if the vehicle breaks down during rental?

Roadside assistance is included free of charge. If you need to call for roadside assistance, you must only call us or our roadside assistance provider. Their contact details can be found inside the vehicle.

Will I be liable for damages to the vehicle?

Vehicle rental includes fully comprehensive insurance. A £500 excess applies and requires to be guaranteed by credit card upon commencement of rental.

You will be responsible for the damage repair amount up to the value of the excess in respect of each and every incident involving the rental vehicle. This includes punctures, damage to wheels, wheel trims, tyres, windscreen, lost or broken keys and any damage due to negligence; the cost of damage resulting from incorrect fuel; and any damage to additional extras such as child seats and GPS devices.

What happens if I get a speeding or parking fine during the rental period?

You are responsible for all fixed penalties, fines and charges issued during the rental period. These could include parking charges, toll charges, traffic or speeding fines, towing charges and clamping costs.

If a fine or charge is sent to us because you haven’t paid a charge or complied with the law, we will deduct the payment for the fine or charge from your credit card.

Can I return the vehicle out of hours or drop it off at another location?

We would always advise that you return the vehicle during opening hours to MacGillivray Motors Ltd and that you are present for the end of rental vehicle inspection. If we agree for the vehicle to be returned out of hours or to another location, you will incur an additional charge which will be calculated on associated mileage and staff costs.

I wish to cancel my booking. Will I be charged?

Reservations must be cancelled in writing, by email, no later than 7 days in advance of the start date of the rental. Cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the start date of the rental will be subject to a cancellation fee of £50.00. Cancellations made less than 24 hours prior to the start date of the rental will be subject to the full cost of the rental being deducted.
